  • Al Baleed Archaeological Park

Al Baleed is an ancient port city in Salalah, Oman. The frankincense trade flourished here during the 8th century to 16th century AD. ‘Al Balaad’ means ‘the city.’

The Al Baleed Archaeological Park is listed in the Unesco Heritage Sites in Oman. Amid the debris unearthed recently by archaeologists, you can see the remains of a large mosque. Originally 148 pillars surrounded a courtyard in four rows in the middle of the complex. Now only a few columns are preserved. There was no harbor then. The goods used to be loaded and unloaded in shallow water with small boats. The nearby Museum of Frankincense Land displays the artifacts excavated from the ruins of this city.
